Two days before the bike parade, during the Danish Minister of Environments, Mrs. Ida Auken’s, visit to St. Petersburg, September 19th to 20th, the Minister gave the youth leader of the Youth Environmental Centre of Vodokanal St. Petersburg, Mikhail Afanasyev, one brand new “Dannebrog” bike to match the consulate bikes. The bike was received due to his continuing engagement in the Centre and his enthusiasm to improve the environment of Russia – and of course Mikhail Afanasyev joined us down Nevsky Prospekt in this year’s Bike Parade.
Normally you do not see many bikes in the streets of St. Petersburg, but this Saturday hundreds of cyclists went through the streets, ringing with their bells and waving at people passing by. The Danish participants, wearing matching t-shirts and riding bikes dressed in Danish flags, had a great time biking through St. Petersburg and showing the citizens of St. Petersburg the Danish passion for biking instead of the taking the car. Hopefully the bike parade will help St. Petersburg to become more bike friendly, so that the citizens of St. Petersburg in the future will be more prone to take the bike instead of the car.
